However, despite its great software, it sometimes happens that your Discord stream has no audio. If that happens to you, you may be wondering how to stream sound on Discord, or wondering why your Discord screen-sharing audio isn’t working. There are 13 common reasons for audio issues in Discord streams, and we’ve got solutions to all of them down below!

Fix #1. Test Your Microphone

Before you freak out, calm down. If you’re lucky, it may just be a small issue with your microphone, rather than a glitch in Discord or your PC!

To test your USB microphone and make sure it’s not the cause of the problem, you can:

Make sure your microphone is turned on if it has a Power button. Move it closer to you in case your audio is just too quiet. Unplug and replug it to make sure it’s properly connected. Try plugging it into a different input port in case the first input port is damaged. Go to your PC’s Control Panel and make sure it senses your microphone.

Fix #2. Check the Status of Discord’s Servers

The next step you can take is to check your Discord server status. This is because the error may be with Discord’s servers, rather than with any of your software or equipment. Thankfully, Discord makes it incredibly easy to check the status of its servers. All you have to do is go to their Discord Status website and look at the API and Voice sections. If at least one of the sections is not green, there’s a good chance that they are the root of the problem, and you’ll have to wait for Discord to fix the issue. And if you really want to be proactive, you can check Discord’s Twitter, where you can read live updates or alert them to the server problems.

Fix #3. Minimize Your Program’s Window

This may seem strange, but Discord has a tendency to have audio issues whenever a game is full-screened. The reason why this happens is that full-screening another program causes a conflict with the permissions for Discord’s software.  Another reason this may happen is that your laptop may not be able to handle the heavy processing load for both the graphics and the audio. However, the solution for this issue is simple: simply minimize the game’s window and play that way.

Fix #4. Change Your Discord Activity Status

Another possible solution is to add the program to Discord. As you’ve probably noticed, Discord automatically senses programs that you’re running or playing and displays them as your Activity Status. However, sometimes, if you’re streaming and Discord doesn’t automatically sense the program, the Discord stream may have no audio. To fix this, you can follow these easy steps:

Go to User Settings  Navigate to Activity Settings Choose Activity Status

If it says “No game detected”:

Click on “Add it!” Choose the game from the dropdown list of programs Discord can sense Press Add Game

If the game is already detected:

Go back to Activity Settings and choose Game Overlay. Enable in-game overlay

Fix #5. Use the Correct Voice Settings

If you’re talking in your Discord stream and it’s not coming through, the issue may be with your voice settings. To use the correct voice settings, you can follow these steps:

Go to User Settings. Navigate to App Settings Click on Voice & Video Change the Input Device to the microphone you’re using. If the audio still doesn’t work, scroll down and click Reset Voice Settings. Press Okay and test if your stream’s audio works now.

Fix #6. Switch to the Legacy Audio Subsystem

If you recently updated Discord, it may be that your hardware is no longer compatible with Discord’s audio subsystem. To fix this, you can follow these steps:

Go to User Settings. Navigate to App Settings Click on Voice & Video Scroll down to the Audio Subsystem section. Click on the dropdown list and choose Legacy. Press Okay to confirm your choice.

Fix #7. Give Discord Administrative Access

If Discord worked well before you started screen-sharing, it may be a problem with the permissions that Discord has on your PC. To give Discord administrative access, you can follow these steps:

Open File Explorer. Find the folder where Discord is installed. Right-click on the Discord .exe file. Click on Run As Administrator

The program should now start up and have administrative access.

Fix #8. Clear the Roaming Data for Discord

Roaming data is another possible cause of audio issues when screen-sharing through Discord. To fix this, you can do the following:

Close Discord entirely so that the software is no longer running on your PC. Press the Windows Button to pull up the search bar. Type %appdata% and press Enter. Open the Roaming folder that should show up. Find the folder for Discord and delete it. Run Discord and see if the problem is fixed.

Fix #9. Turn Off Your Antivirus

If your Discord stream still has no audio, it may be a problem with your antivirus. To test this, simply turn off your antivirus temporarily and see if your stream audio starts working again.

Fix #10. Keep Discord Updated

If you haven’t updated Discord for a while, it may be an issue with the current version you have. To check for the latest version of Discord, you can do the following:

Press the Windows Button and R. This will open the Run program. Type %localappdata% and press Enter. Navigate to the Discord folder and open it. Find the Update.exe file and open it to update Discord.

Note: As well as updating Discord, you can customize it! You can change the Discord background theme to be whatever you want.

Fix #11. Reinstall Discord

If the update still doesn’t work, it may be that you need to uninstall and reinstall Discord. To reinstall Discord, you can do the following:

Open the Control Panel. Choose Uninstall A Program Find Discord in the list and right-click it. Choose Uninstall. Once it’s done uninstalling, download the latest version of Discord and install it.

Fix #12. Restart Your PC

If nothing else works, it may be a small glitch caused by your PC being over-exhausted. The solution for this is just as simple: restart your PC! Once it’s up and running again, check if your Discord stream still has no audio.

Fix #13. Update Your Audio Driver

The last possible reason for this issue is an outdated or missing audio driver. This often happens if  your laptop is not new. All you need to do is find out the manufacturer of your PC’s sound card, then search their website for the latest audio driver. Once you’ve downloaded it, install it and test if your Discord screen-sharing audio now works. Hopefully, this article solved your audio dilemma!
